19 Jul 2023

The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque - today - replaced the covering of the Kaaba as was the annual custom, under the supervision of His Excellency the General President of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, Sheikh Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Abdulaziz Al-Sudais, through a specific work team from the King Abdulaziz Complex. To cover the Holy Kaaba, where the team began by dismantling the old cover and installing the new one, then installing it in the corners and surface of the Kaaba.
The new kiswa, consisting of four separate sides and the door curtain, was installed. Each of the four sides of the Kaaba was raised separately to the top of the Holy Kaaba in preparation for spreading it over the old side, and fixing the side from above by tying it and lowering the other end of the side, after the ropes of the old side were loosened. By moving the new side up and down in a constant motion, then lowering the old side from the bottom and keeping the new side. The process was repeated four times for each side until the garment was complete, then the belt was weighted in a straight line to the four sides by sewing it.
After all the sides are fixed, the corners are fixed by sewing them from the top of the garment to the bottom. After that is completed, the curtain is placed, which required time and skill to place in the work, by making an opening estimated at the size of the curtain in the black fabric, which is estimated at approximately 3.30 meters in width until the end of the garment. Then three holes were made in the black fabric to secure the curtain from under the fabric, and finally the ends were fixed by sewing them into the black fabric on the garment.
The outside of the kiswa is covered with patterns woven with black textile threads (in the jacquard manner), on which are written the words (O God, O God), (There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God), (Glory be to God and praise be to Him), (Glory be to God the Great), and (O judge, oh mannan). These phrases are repeated on all pieces of kiswah cloth.
The number of pieces of the belt covering the Holy Kaaba is 16 pieces, in addition to seven pieces under the belt, 12 lamps below the belt, four lamps placed in the corners of the Kaaba, and five lamps (Allahu Akbar) above the Black Stone, in addition to the outer curtain of the door of the Holy Kaaba.
The cladding consumes about 850 kg of raw silk, which was dyed black inside the complex, 120 kg of gold wire, and 100 kg of silver wire.
Nearly 200 makers and administrators work at the King Abdul Aziz Complex for Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba, all of whom are trained, qualified, and specialized citizens. The complex includes several departments: the dye house, automatic weaving, hand weaving, printing, belting, goldsmithing, tailoring, and kiswah assembly, which includes the largest sewing machine.
